Watch Don (2006) Online on Subcommune

Subcommune is a state-of-the-art new smartphone app that lets you watch videos with English subtitles. For the movie lover, this app comes with an incredibly useful feature called video bookmarking. Guess what, you can now save your favorite parts of a movie by simply tapping on the relevant subtitle! You can then watch them later. Go ahead; this is your chance to show your loyalty to your favorite actor, moviemaker or movie. For today, I want you to watch the movie Don, on Subcommune.

In this remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan-starring classic, Shah Rukh Khan plays the lead role. If there ever was a man in India, who would consider accepting the shoes of Bachchan, it would be only Khan. The storyline is about the loyal ally of a notorious drug lord, Singhania. This ally, the eponymous Don (Shah Rukh Khan), must be captured for Singhania to be brought down, and both the Malaysian and the Indian intelligence agencies are at the job. Don is infamous and dangerous, and he thinks nothing of killing his own men if they defect to the other side.  However, when Don is injured fatally in an encounter with the police, DCP D’Silva (played wonderfully by the never-disappointing Boman Irani) tracks down a Don look alike, Vijay (played again by Shah Rukh Khan). He asks Vijay to agree to infiltrate Don’s gang so that the chain can be brought down, the drug trade shut and the overlords arrested.  Vijay is reluctant, but is baited by D’Silva’s promise to admit Deepu, a child whom Vijay has taken under his wings, to a reputed school. As Vijay enters Don’s gang, a series of intricate complications thicken the plot and make for an edge-of-the-seat watch.

Watch the Official Trailer of Gunday on Subcommune

The trailer of the hyped Gunday (starring Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan) has understandably attracted a lot of views on video hosting sites right immediately after its release. Both Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor are promising young stars, while Priyanka Chopra has staunchly held her position as one of the top actresses in recent years. Irrfan Khan is arguably the best character actor out there and some would probably expect him to give tough competition to the protagonists for the accolades! All in all, the hype surrounding the movie shows how much the audience expects from it. And the trailer promises no less – it is loud, spectacular, colorful, invigorating and tight. It is replete with breathtaking views of Calcutta (of the 1970s-80s), stunning Sholay-esque locales, testosterone-pumping grandiose assertions of heroism and violence, and some rather commendable cinematography.

To know what I am talking about, watch this trailer with subtitles on Subcommune. This app lets you watch a variety of videos (but for now, I’d like you to watch the Gunday trailer!), and save the best bits. You can then watch them later on. As soon as I watched the trailer, I saved the remarkable scene where the two protagonists jump off a cliff onto a moving train! It’s fun and rather convenient.  And after all, who could curb the curiosity of wanting to know what the English transcriptions of our dramatic, brilliant Bollywood dialogues sound like?

Watch Taare Zameen Par Online on Subcommune

Now, watch Taare Zameen Par - the landmark 2007 Bollywood movie (also Aamir Khan’s directorial debut) on Subcommune, the newly introduced mobile subtitle app. Apart from playing videos with English subtitles, this smartphone app even comes up with a unique video bookmarking feature, through which you can save all your favorite moments in the movie and watch them over and again as per your requirement.

TZP deals with an issue that had hitherto remained unaddressed in Bollywood.  It tells the story of  eight year old Ishaan Awasthi, an apparently  ‘dull’ child. He fails tests, gets poor grades and cannot concentrate on studies. But he has a fertile imagination and a bright, creative mind. Unfortunately for him, mere imagination or creativity does not cut it at school. He gets scolded, punished and belittled. To top it all, his elder brother is an exemplary student. This compounds the problem because Ishaan’s father is a strict disciplinarian who has little patience for poor performance.

After a particularly poor academic report, Ishaan is sent away to a boarding school, where the problem grows and takes a toll on his spirit. He gradually withdraws and refuses to participate in activities. This is when a new teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh (portrayed by Aamir Khan), joins the school. He has previously instructed children with developmental disabilities, and immediately realizes that Ishaan is special and has different needs. He takes it on himself to explain it to Ishaan’s parents that their child is not unintelligent, but that he only perceives the world differently. Nikumbh also notices the sophistication in Ishaan’s paintings and endeavors to bring his talent to light.

Although Ishaan’s father is initially skeptical, he later relents, and Nikumbh slowly begins addressing Ishaan’s condition. He succeeds in drawing the child out of his confinement and encourages him to do what he does best – painting. Ishaan also begins opening up and regaining his lost streak of cheerfulness.  It is tempting to disclose the climax of the movie, but we’ll desist.

All we’ll say is that, as the movie draws to a close, the audience realizes that difference need not necessarily mean disability. This is a brilliant movie – a potent social commentary – stinging in its wit, generous in its candor and intense in its message.

Watch Lagaan Online on Subcommune

Now, watch Lagaan - the epic Bollywood movie on Subcommune, a newly launched smartphone app that plays videos with English subtitles. The app also comes up with an advanced video bookmarking feature, which lets you save all your favorite moments in the movie.

Lagaan is one of the few Oscar nominated Bollywood movies that you can’t afford to miss.  It is a well-crafted movie, with a strong storyline, exceptional performances, good music and unmatched grandeur and opulence.

The plot is set during the British Raj, in a village in western India. The village has been suffering a drought and the British rulers have been oppressing the peasants. High taxes have been imposed on them, which they cannot pay. So they endeavor to persuade the officers to reduce the tax. However, not only do the British not pay heed to their pleas, they also insult and abuse them as well as the local Maharaja.

At this juncture, Bhuvan (played brilliantly by Aamir Khan), a leader of sorts among the villagers, confronts the local British commander. The outraged and arrogant commander offers him a wager – the villagers would be relieved of paying three years’ worth of taxes if they beat the British team in a game of cricket. However, they have to pay three times the usual tax if they can’t!

It is a tough choice, but Bhuvan insists that since the villagers cannot pay the tax anyway, they have nothing to lose. He takes up the challenge of beating the British at their own game. Now he must prove to his people that his decision is sound, and then build, coach and train a team to play a game they have never played.

He has his share of enemies and ill-wishers within the ranks, and he must work to end petty feuds and unite his people. It is a Herculean task. Will he be able to make it?

Top Music Apps Launched in 2013

Given the primacy of music in everyday life, it is no surprise that the App Store produced a number of delightful music apps in 2013 – for both music lovers and musicians. A host of new apps are now available to enhance the experience of listening to or creating music. Here is a list of the best of these to help you take your pick!

Songkick

Many concert-goers are familiar with the hassle of having to follow the hundreds of their favourite bands and artists in order to stay updated about upcoming gigs. This app does this for you after it finds your favourite artists based on your music library. Plus, it keeps track of the shows in your location, to save you the trouble of having to travel far for good shows.

Beat – Music Player

This third-party music player revamps the music listening experience. It comes with as many as 16 iOS 7 designed themes. You can also unlock five bonus themes through a series of achievements. The interface is smooth. To change a song, all you need to do is swipe sideways. To change volume, you need to swipe vertically, and to pause a song you must only tap the screen. You can pinch to share music and zoom in.

Listen - The Gesture Music Player

This is a gesture based music player that you can use without even looking at the screen. All you need to do is swipe – to skip a song, swipe left; to replay, swipe right; swipe up to add tracks to favorites and down to access the music library. To play or pause a song, just tap. To share songs on Facebook and Twitter, drag the center button up to the right corner. Drag it up to the left corner to send the music to a Bluetooth speaker or AirPlay.

Google Play Music
With the iOS version of Google’s music player, you can create custom radio stations from any song, artist or album, and listen to them. You can also upload your favourite songs to your Google Play account, or you can just choose to listen to playlists created by music experts from Google.

Djay 2
The arrival of digital music saved deejays the trouble of having to lug boxes of records to play at shows. The Djay app by iPad and Algoriddim made the job even easier. The app was redesigned with a more iOS 7-centric aesthetic this year. The record display allows you to pretend to scratch vinyl, as with the original Djay, but with the Djay 2, you can also switch to waveform view. This mode is easier to work with.

TNR-e-US

The Yamaha Tenori-on was created about a decade ago. It was a music programming software that turned sound into a visual performance and blended music with art. An iOS version for touchscreens, the TNR-I, was launched in 2011. The TNR-e-US was launched this year and is the newest version. It is equipped with an entire range of tones devoted to new dance music, including electro, house and dubstep. And the best bit is that anyone, and not just professional musicians, is able to use this.
